audio:
i’ve been gifted
with very little negative energy in my life
specifically
there aren’t obscene amounts of insults
or badmouthing
that i’ve had to deal with
at least not that i know of
so when i opened up my tiktok
a few weeks prior
and got to witness a group of individuals
roast the vegan meat (a.k.a sh*t) out of me
IT STUNG!
i know how little i should care
how meaningless negativity is
and how without access to total context
one should never completely decide
whether they loved my work
or wished i’d have acted in a silent film instead
(the internet is home to some very creatively worded insults!)
but jacob collier makes a great point
when he tells us
“disgusting is more interesting than bland
if people don't like it, it's a sign you're doing something interesting
the least engagement somebody could give you is disinterest
if they give you anything more, you're provoking something
stimulating any response is a positive action, in fact:
‘the opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference’
if someone feels a strong way about what you're making
it is distinct, it has an identity, and it's worth pursuing”
not everyone will like your work
but the fact that they engage with it is proof
that it made them stop and stare
and at the very least, take a moment to think
that should be enough
for us to know
that we did our job
after all
what else should we do?
stop?
nah
that’s a little too bland for me.
dig it
